The Burj Khalifa, originally called the Burj Dubai before its official opening, is a towering skyscraper located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Standing as the tallest structure in the world, it reaches an impressive total height of 829.8 meters (2,722 feet, slightly over half a mile), with a roof height of 828 meters (2,717 feet), which includes a 242.6-meter spire. Since its completion in 2009, the Burj Khalifa has held the title of the world’s tallest building, surpassing Taipei 101, which had been the record holder since 2004.
Construction of the Burj Khalifa began in 2004, and its exterior was finalized in 2009. The building’s primary structure is made of reinforced concrete, with some of the steel used in its construction sourced from the former East German parliament building, the Palace of the Republic in East Berlin. The skyscraper officially opened in 2010 as the centerpiece of Downtown Dubai, a large-scale mixed-use development.
The tower was named in honor of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the former president of the United Arab Emirates. During the global financial crisis, Dubai faced financial difficulties, and the UAE government, under Sheikh Khalifa’s leadership, provided financial assistance to the project’s developer, Emaar Properties. In recognition of this support, Dubai’s ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, renamed the building from “Burj Dubai” to “Burj Khalifa” during its inauguration.
